Summer of Love Festival

9th August 2023 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm BST

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 7:30 pm on Wednesday, repeating until 30th August 2023

Join us in the heart of Brixton for the Summer of Love, a festival of Wednesday night events where we aim to bring a spirit of love, connection and harmony to Effra Space. This series will immerse us into different facets of love, or Metta, in a serene and inclusive atmosphere. For the Buddha, love was a path to true spiritual liberation and we aim to explore that possibility through Buddhist art, music and movement.

Guided meditations that unlock compassion, soul-touching sacred rhythms and even a rejuvenating gong bath will help us to discover the transformative power of love within ourselves and all beings. This festival is a celebration of unity, where everyone is welcome. Let the magic of Buddhist art, music, rituals, gong baths, meditation, and community uplift your spirit and inspire you towards compassion in your life. All events are drop-in, no need to book.

Full Lineup of events

19th July – The Heart of Listening: An event with meditation and music

In the Buddhist tradition, art and beauty can play an important role in our practice, communicating higher values and refining our emotional sensitivity. With this event, we will create a special space to gather as a community and connect through music and meditation. Led by Prajnaghosa and team.

26th July – The Sutta of Love: A talk on the Karaniya Metta Sutta with Paramabandhu, President of the Brixton Buddhist Community

Paramabandhu will lead an evening of study of the Karaniya Metta Sutta, the Buddha’s profound and original teaching on loving kindness. Paramabandhu has over 30 years of experience as an order member, which he will use to unveil the essence of this ancient scripture. Suggested donation for this event is £10/£15.

2nd August – The Sound of Love: Gong Bath meditation with Bex Arthur and music by Prajnaghosa

Have you ever experienced a gong bath meditation? The gong’s resonations can help us cultivate a profound sense of relaxation and peace. Suddhaka will introduce us to the figure of the Buddha Amithabha alongside the meditation. Prajnaghosa will also perform on the Autoharp, creating an atmosphere of spaciousness and light.

9th August – Mantra and Devotional Workshop with Dharmasvara and Jac Cooper

Together we’ll explore the mythical side of Buddhism through the art of mantra chanting. Mantras are considered powerful tools for spiritual practice and transformation, and can be focal points to calm the mind, cultivate mindfulness, and connect with higher states of consciousness. Led by Dharmasvara and Jac Cooper.

16th August – The Frequency of Love: A gong bath sound healing and meditation workshop with Maitrinara and Bex Arthur

We invite you to join us for an immersive sound healing experience featuring a meditation session and a gong bath. Allow yourself to disconnect from the external world, tune in to the subtle nuances of sound, and rediscover a deeper sense of self and inner peace.

23rd August – The Movement and Music of Love: Meditation, Music and Yoga with Prajnaghosa and Emma Tian Williamson

The class will explore ways in which embodied awareness can create a connection between the mind and heart through gentle and restorative movements, guided meditation, and live ambient music. Led by Emma Tian Williamson and Prajnaghosa. Mats and equipment will be provided.

30th August – The Summer of Love Closing Ceremony: a ritual on Amitabha to end the festival

Drawing upon the rich tapestry of Buddhist ritual, this final celebration gathers together all the momentum of the festival. Rituals hold a profound place in Buddhism, serving as expressions of devotion, mindfulness, and community building. This final evening will be a moment to reflect, to celebrate our journey together, and to embrace the Dharma. Led by the Summer Of Love team.
