Sangha Day Celebration: How can we build a truly diverse & international Sangha?

20th November @ 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm GMT

Join us for an evening of celebration and reflection in honour of the Sangha, or spiritual community.

The Sangha began at the moment when, following the Buddha’s enlightenment, he ordained his first disciple onto the path of awakening. This gesture of spiritual friendship, or Kalyana Mitrata (friendship in the beautiful), was to become the basis for the many and varied forms of Buddhist community, across the world. This early formation of the spiritual community began the long and joyous refrain which has echoed down the ages:

‘We reverence the Sangha, and aspire to follow it:
The fellowship of those who tread the way,
As, one by one, we make our own commitment,
An ever widening circle, the Sangha grows’

Our Brixton Buddhist community is evolving and growing into a vibrant place of friendship, support and Dharmic inspiration. We have much to be thankful for and much to celebrate, but there is still so much to learn!

This Sangha day, we’ll be asking the question ‘How can we build a truly diverse & international Sangha?’

Maitreyabandhu, a well known friend and teacher based at the London Buddhist Centre, will draw on his experiences of building Buddhist Community for over three decades to talk about how we can build community in a divided world. He believes that now more than ever, people can see and feel the need for an effective community, especially since lock-down. He even goes as far to say that we can’t really develop and grow as human beings outside of community. But the question remains ‘How do we create a truly diverse, international community?’: A community in which the vision of truth communicated by the Buddha and exemplified in his Kalayana Mitrata, is communicated, developed, and lived out, for the good of the world?

The programme for the evening will include meditation, short talks and Buddhist Puja & Mitra ceremonies – ceremonies for those in the Sangha wishing to make a ritual of commitment to practising within the Triratna Buddhist Order.

There’ll also be hot food, coffee and cake and a chance to spend time with friends old and new.
