Parinirvana Day Celebrations

11th February @ 2:30 pm - 7:00 pm GMT

Parinirvana Day Festival
with a talk from Danayutta and Mitra Ceremonies

Death is the great mystery that awaits us all. Our lives are lived out in the knowledge of this, but so often we don’t want to talk about it, or we dismiss it as morbid. But from a Buddhist perspective a deep understanding of impermanence will help us see how to live and love more fully.

Parinirvana day, which marks the day the Buddha let go of his earthly body, is an opportunity to both celebrate the life of the Buddha, and to recognise the transient nature of our own human experience.

This year, Danayutta, a much loved and respected teacher and friend to the Brixton community, will be asking the question “how does an enlightened being approach death, and what do they choose to communicate in their final days?”

She’ll be exploring the very moving, very human stories of the Buddha’s connection and communication with his beloved heart-disciples in the period before his death.

In the second half of the day we will have a special Buddhist Ceremony during which we will be welcoming two new Mitras, or friends, into the Triratna community.

Parinirvana day is open to all. Come and celebrate the Buddha’s Parinirvana with us on Saturday 11th February from 2:30pm to 7pm. For talks, meditation, reflection and Buddhist ritual, and a chance to connect with friends old and new in the community. If you’ve never attended a Buddhist ritual before you are welcome to watch or join in as you wish.

You are welcome to bring photos of loved ones who have died over the past year or that you particularly want to remember, to place on the shrine. Please let us know on the day if you would like a loved one’s name read out in the special Metta Bhavana meditation practice.

Programme on the day:

2:30 – 3.00 Welcome and arriving meditation

3.00 – 4.10 Talk from Danayutta followed by Q&A

Donations

To keep our classes accessible, all events at Brixton Buddhist Community are offered by donation. We’d suggest a donation of ÂŁ25/ÂŁ15 for this festival event, depending on your income. Although our classes are all run by volunteers, in order to cover our costs we’re completely reliant on your gifts and generosity to run classes, courses and events, and to keep them available for all.
