Dharma Night: What are Buddhist monks?

4th August @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm BST

Dharma Night at the Brixton Buddhist Community

Now just in-person, and no need to book!
Just turn up at Effra Space, Brixton, from 7.20pm

Dharma Night is a public class for anyone interested in understanding and practicing the simple and profound teachings of Buddhism. With practice, this path is said to lead to a state of mind beyond dissatisfaction and suffering, toward a mind that is light, spacious and filled with joy.

This class is especially suitable for those newer to Buddhism, or those who might be exploring Dharma teachings for the first time.

Each week covers a fundamental Buddhist theme or teaching and is built around a discussion between two experienced teachers. There will also be a short guided meditation, comfort break and a chance for questions.

Dharma Night: What are Buddhist monks?

Currently at Dharma night we are exploring the Three Jewels, representing the ideal of the Buddha, the path of the Dharma and and the community of enlightened practitioners, who work to radiate the light of awakening into the world.

This five week series will look at glimmering facets of the Sangha jewel; the Spiritual Community that inspires and guides us on the path towards enlightenment.

Join us this Wednesday as we delve into the topic of the Monastic Order. In the traditional and historical cultures of Asia, Buddhists are usually separated into lifestyles of either laity; those that go about more conventional daily lives, or those of Monks; that dedicate themselves to a more formal and full-time spiritual life. This current formalisation of the Monastic lifestyle has evolved over many hundreds of years, but in the Buddha’s day it was the Dharma, not a code of rules, that created the bond between his followers. Join us to discuss the topic of The Monastic Order, where we will look into whether elements of the Buddhist Monastic rules, ceremonies and lifestyles might still be relevant to us in our 21st century Western lives.

Join in-person

Social distancing measures have now been lifted in England, so this event will run at a larger capacity than recent classes. Simply drop in on the night, no need to book!

Face coverings are also now discretionary. The wearing of face coverings at this event will therefore be optional but still welcomed if you would prefer to do so.
