Dharma Night: The Dharma as a Raft

June 2 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm BST

Dharma Night at the Brixton Buddhist Community

Dharma Night is a public class for anyone interested in understanding and practicing the simple and profound teachings of Buddhism. With practice, this path is said to lead to a state of mind beyond dissatisfaction and suffering, toward a mind that is light, spacious and filled with joy.

This class is especially suitable for those newer to Buddhism, who might be exploring Dharma teachings for the first time.

Each week covers a fundamental Buddhist theme or teaching and is built around a discussion between two experienced teachers. There will also be a short guided meditation, tea break and a chance for questions.

Dharma Night: The Dharma as a Raft

At Dharma night we explore the Three Jewels, representing the ideal of the Buddha, the path of the Dharma and and the community of enlightened practitioners, who work to radiate the light of awakening into the world.

This nine week series will look at glimmering facets of the Dharma jewel; the tangible path to Enlightenment taught by the Buddha and his followers down the ages.

This Wednesday we will take a closer look at how the Dharma is communicated in its writings. After connecting with the spirit of Buddhism, we must also understand the place of its doctrines and teachings. The Dharma is a medium of communication about a unique experience; the enlightenment experience. To achieve this, the Dharma is not an end in itself but a means to an end. The Buddha compares his teaching to the raft used for crossing a great stretch of water, and that once the other shore is reached, it is to be let go of. On the other hand, we must be careful not to discard the raft too early, so we can make use of it until we have completed the journey.

** Please note – social distancing and wearing of masks is required to attend this class. **

Spaces are limited, so a free booking is required to reserve your place.
