Dharma Night: The importance of ‘lay’ practitioners

11th August @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm BST

Dharma Night at the Brixton Buddhist Community

Now just in-person, and no need to book!
Just turn up at Effra Space, Brixton, from 7.20pm

Dharma Night is a public class for anyone interested in understanding and practicing the simple and profound teachings of Buddhism. With practice, this path is said to lead to a state of mind beyond dissatisfaction and suffering, toward a mind that is light, spacious and filled with joy.

This class is especially suitable for those newer to Buddhism, or those who might be exploring Dharma teachings for the first time.

Each week covers a fundamental Buddhist theme or teaching and is built around a discussion between two experienced teachers. There will also be a short guided meditation, comfort break and a chance for questions.

Dharma Night: The importance of ‘lay’ practitioners

Currently at Dharma night we are exploring the Three Jewels, representing the ideal of the Buddha, the path of the Dharma and and the community of enlightened practitioners, who work to radiate the light of awakening into the world.

This five week series will look at glimmering facets of the Sangha jewel; the Spiritual Community that inspires and guides us on the path towards enlightenment.

This Wednesday, we will be discussing the topic of the laity. In the traditional and historical cultures of Asia, lay Buddhists, or ‘householders’, are those that go about more conventional daily lives, with work and family. In some traditional schools, less emphasis is placed on spiritual development for the laity, than for monks. In part, this is something the Mahāyāna schools aimed to address with a more accessible, wider Sangha, called the Mahāsaṅgha or ‘great assembly’. Join us for discussion as we delve into the topic of how we might make spiritual commitment and progress, whatever our lifestyle choices may be.

Join in-person

Social distancing measures have now been lifted in England, so this event will run at a larger capacity than recent classes. Simply drop in on the night, no need to book!

Face coverings are also now discretionary. The wearing of face coverings at this event will therefore be optional but still welcomed if you would prefer to do so.
