On this day 2600 years ago the spiritual seeker Sidhattha Gautama sat down under the Bodhi tree on the banks of the river Niranjana, and vowed to gain a new type of consciousness, or die trying. The state he discovered, characterised by luminous clarity, boundless love and energy, has since been termed ‘the deathless, ‘nirvana’ or ‘enlightenment’. On this day Sidhatta became known as the Buddha, or ‘awakened one’.

This event was so significant that the whole of Buddhism throughout the ages; every teaching, meditation, retreat, or community that’s formed since has been inspired by it. So what does it mean for us today, living here in South London?

The Buddha Day festival will explore this question through talks, discussion, meditation and ritual. This year Jnanavaca, a well-loved teacher from the London Buddhist Centre and good friend to the Brixton Buddhist Community, will be giving a talk on ‘‘The meaning of Enlightenment and why it matters.’’

Buddhist festivals are a golden opportunity for everybody in the Brixton Buddhist Community, both old and new, to come together to create a special, even magical event, in a loving and lively atmosphere. We’re also delighted to be welcoming two new mitras.

We’re inviting everyone to bring their own Buddha statue or image to put on the shrine, so please do bring yours.
