A Guide to Buddhist Ritual: The Symbolism of a Shrine

In this four week series Viryanaga and Amarapuspa will be discussing the whats, whys and hows of Buddhist ritual and will present a case for how engaging with these practices can change our states of mind and help us realise our positive intentions.

Images of the Buddha are everywhere these days: hotels, spas, restaurants, garden centres, bars and even on clothing. It’s clear that the serene, peaceful figure of the Buddha is symbolic to all kinds of people, whether they’re Buddhist or not.

But what does it mean to have a Buddha figure on a shrine surrounded by flowers, candles and incense? Especially in the context of a religion like Buddhism, which doesn’t recognise or worship the Buddha as a creator God.

In this week’s guide to ritual we ask the questions – what is the the meaning behind the Buddha figure, the objects that often surround him, and what does the act of making an offering to a shrine mean and signify?

Following the conversation, there will be a chance for questions, and the option to join in with a short online Buddhist ritual.

All welcome. Suitable for newcomers.
